Why are the Claremore Zebras
Red and White?

Why the Claremore mascot is a zebra and even more importantly, why is the zebra red and white? Here's the scoop on the whole story.

What I have been told is that many years ago when the founding fathers of Claremore Public Schools laid the first school building brick in 1853..........Ok, I'm just kidding. With the coming of athletics, there was a definite need for a uniform and a mascot. When they had to send off for the first uniforms, they decided on a traditional look of the time, of red and white stripes.

What they soon received in the mail was far from traditional though. They got what they wanted as far as the colors went, but they hadn't planned on the vertical stripes that they received. The season's first game was drawing near and they didn't have time to return the jerseys and have new ones to start off the season. They had no choice but to keep them. When the town saw the debut of Claremore's new look, they had no trouble helping the school decide on a mascot. When someone yelled out that they all looked like a bunch of zebras running around, not only did the name stick but the uniform color stuck as well.

Sure it may be somewhat bizarre and strange, but that's what's great about it. There are only two schools in the nation that have a zebra as their mascot. But Claremore High School is the only MIGHTY ZEBRAS that are red and white.
